Internships and job placement

All the degree courses include a period of hours to be carried out in internships. The internship is usually unpaid, but the activities carried out may be awarded training credits and be recorded in the student and professional register.

Curricular internship

During their studies, students may undertake a training period outside the university known as a curricular internship.

Curricular internships consist of a period of training carried out by students in a private company or public body; they represent a moment of alternation between study and work as part of training processes aimed at facilitating professional choices through direct knowledge of the world of work.  Students can choose to organise their internship among those proposed by UPO or in an institution or company of their choice, provided that an agreement between the host organization and the University is signed and that the internship project is discussed with the teaching staff and the internship office.

During the internship some topics covered theoretically in the university course are tested and expanded upon. The internship can be carried out in Italy or abroad through special agreements between the University and the host organisation; it does not constitute an employment relationship and the activities carried out are not normally remunerated but training credits are issued. The experience can be reported not only in the student curriculum but also in the professional curriculum.

Trainees will have to comply with the internal rules defined by each company, follow the guidelines adopted by the Piedmont Regional Coordination Committee (Co.Re.Co) and carry out, before the start of the traineeship, the health and safety training course for workers and those equivalent to workers with a low, medium or high risk level corresponding to the activity to be performed; it is necessary for the person concerned to check precisely which type of course is required by the Host Organisation in order to carry out the traineeship in the identified Service/Office.

Companies

A work placement or internship is useful not only for the student, who can experience the world of the workplace and put acquired skills into practice, but also for the host company or organisation which can train up the student according to their own requirements.

How to activate an internship: companies wishing to collaborate with the Department and University can publish their offer/requests after completing the accreditation procedure via the link Registration of Host Companies/Organisations

Guidelines / instructions for the activation of internships and apprenticeships can be found in the pdf attachment at the bottom of the page.

Once access details have been issued, all activity can be autonomously managed from the reserved area.

Identifying the trainee/intern: initial contact between the candidate and company may be initiated by the student/graduate, the Department or the host company/organisation.

Stipulation of agreement and training project: Trainees/interns are bound by the agreements stipulated by the Department and/or University and the host company/organisation. Copies of the agreement must each carry the €16 tax stamp; this does not apply to those exempt from the tax as indicated in Presidential Decree no. 641/72 and no. 642/72. The agreement provides for an insurance policy (accidents and civil liability) undertaken by the University.
After signing of the agreement, it is possible to draft the training and orientation project, containing all the relevant information. The maximum duration of a curricular internship is 12 months, while training and orientation is of 6 months.

Implementation of internship and conclusion: During the internship, the host tutor signs the presence register for the intern/trainee. At the end of the period, the host company or organisation is required to complete a final report (on headed paper), which evaluates the student’s internship.
